A proud company of The Shaw Group Limited
ABOUT US
Since 1959, Clayton has established itself as the premier community developer in the Maritimes. With The Shaw Group Limited. as our parent company, we're part of 160 years of business success in Atlantic Canada. We're proud to have created communities for more than 70,000 residents to call “home”, while producing substantial economic impact and more than a billion dollars in developed real estate.
To Halifax residents, we are the community builder who has always been there; the name behind the most welcoming and sought-after communities - those that have proven to grow more valued and appreciated with each passing year.
With smart planning, innovation, careful consideration to modern life and a nod to the inviting warmth of villages long ago, we are developing far more than land. We are creating accessible, amenity-rich communities in prime locations. We’re helping build support networks and friendships, enriched living and legacies. Clayton has been building these sought-after spaces since 1959, and our passion only continues to grow.
Our commitment to quality is and always has been the foundation of our success. Community protective covenants, architectural controls and stringent design standards ensure Clayton communities grow as warm neighbourhoods with enduring beauty and high appreciation. Location plays an important role - that’s why Clayton selects premium locations for its communities. Ease of access, proximity to amenities and downtown cores, and trees and nature trails surrounding each community means that residents have the perfect balance of urban and suburban living.
At Clayton, quality of life is as important as quality of construction when it comes to community development. It takes more than lumber and nails to build a home – it takes proper planning, care and commitment. Clayton is the community builder you can count on.
OUR PAST
Innovation and risk-taking has been a hallmark of our company since its inception. Here are just some examples of Clayton’s innovative thinking, trail-blazing leadership, and risk-taking:
-
Developed 18+ communities throughout Atlantic Canada - Knightsridge, Colby Village, Clayton Park and the Ravines of Bedford South to name a few
-
Designed and built Canada’s first EnviroHome in 1992
-
Created the first privately developed master-planned community in eastern Canada: Clayton Park
-
Introduced protective covenants and design controls for entire planned communities — covenants and controls that are still present in communities years after development has been completed
-
Designed and built the first condominium development in Atlantic Canada
-
Pioneered and worked with the legal community and government institutions to create the first condominium legislation for Nova Scotia
-
First signatories on the R2000 housing program in Canada. Clayton conceived, managed, and promoted Halifax’s annual R2000 Home Tour for many years
-
Were the first to sell “pad-ready” and certified residential lots, providing a more stream-lined building process to private contractors and individual homeowners
-
Worked with Halifax Regional Municipality to develop and implement the Region’s Capital Cost Charge program (three of Clayton’s master planned communities incorporate HRM’s cost-recovery program saving taxpayers millions of dollars in infrastructure spending over the next 20 to 25 years)
OUR PRESENT
Currently, Clayton is developing four communities in Halifax - The Parks of West Bedford, The Parks of Lake Charles, Mount Hope Village, Opal Ridge, Carriagewood Estates, and Kiln Creek. In St. John’s, Galway, is Newfoundland’s & Labrador’s most premiere community.
While each of these communities offer its own vibe, all are centered around quality of life and convenience. Clayton communities always provide a healthy balance of beautiful nature at your doorstep with quick and easy access to amenities. We are proud to build communities varying in size, housing type, housing style and price point.
Because everyone loves living in a Clayton community, we offer something for every stage of life so residents can grow in and with the community. From apartments for those who aren’t looking for homeownership, single detached homes for families of all sizes, townhouses and semi-detached homes for more affordable homeownership or downsizing, one-level bungalows that allow for aging in place, and luxury retirement and assisted living apartments to enjoy the later years of life.
OUR FUTURE
As always, Clayton has some exciting projects in the works. One community that has just started is The Parks of Lake Charles - a community that will offer a similar lifestyle to that of the very sought-after community of The Parks of West Bedford, with innovative homes, various housing choices, easy access to downtown Halifax and amenities, in a community surrounded by trees and nature.
We are also extremely excited to be working on a very special project - Kiln Creek, in Lantz, Nova Scotia. Kiln Creek is more than a beautiful Clayton community - it is an important legacy project in the story of The Shaw Group. It gives a nod to the very foundation of the company - the strength of those original, hand-made clay bricks. Kiln Creek is a show of gratitude to Allan Shaw and his family for their long-standing commitment to Atlantic Canada - that very commitment shaped the strong corporate culture of quality, loyalty and dedication within each of its divisions.
As a legacy community developed by Clayton, it will be the first master-planned community in the province outside of Halifax. As a tribute, each street within the neighbourhood has been named after a Shaw employee who made a great impact on the company during its initial years. The community and company still benefit from the lineage of some of those first employees.
Kiln Creek will showcase the many products of the divisions with emphasis on the traditional clay brick. This new and exciting community that is now under construction is anticipated to have approximately 1500 homes, townhomes and apartments by the time it is fully built by 2030.
Stay tuned for more announcements about exciting new communities that will break boundaries and become their own success stories.
